Stop Smoking Day March 11th 2026 UK Campaign

At Hook Lane Dental Practice, we have proudly cared for our community for over 50 years. As March marks Stop Smoking Day in the UK, we want to take this opportunity to highlight how smoking affects not only your general health, but your oral health too — and how we can support you if you’re thinking about quitting.

We are also pleased to share that we are currently welcoming new NHS patients.

No Smoking Day 2026 – Take Back Your Life

This year, No Smoking Day takes place on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, with the powerful theme:

“Take back your life.”

Held annually on the second Wednesday of March in the UK, this national campaign provides resources, support, and motivation to help smokers quit — not only improving their health but also benefiting their wellbeing and finances.

It’s a great opportunity to reflect, reset, and take the first step towards becoming smoke-free.

The Impact of Smoking on General Health

Smoking is one of the leading causes of preventable illness in the UK. It significantly increases the risk of:

  • Lung disease
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Various cancers
  • Reduced immune function
  • Delayed healing

While many people are aware of these risks, fewer realise the serious damage smoking can cause inside the mouth.

How Smoking Affects Your Oral Health

Smoking has a direct and harmful effect on your teeth, gums, and overall oral health.

1. Gum Disease

Smoking is one of the biggest risk factors for gum disease. It reduces blood flow to the gums, weakens your immune response, and makes it harder for your body to fight infection.

2. Masks Gum Problems

Smokers often notice that their gums don’t bleed — even when gum disease is present. This is because nicotine causes blood vessels to constrict, limiting blood flow to the tissues.

While this may appear positive, it actually hides inflammation and infection.

3. What Happens When You Stop Smoking?

Many patients become concerned when they stop smoking because their gums suddenly begin to bleed when brushing.

This is completely normal.

When you quit smoking:

  • Blood vessels return to normal function
  • Healthy blood flow is restored
  • Inflammation becomes visible
  • Gums may bleed for around 1–2 weeks as bacteria are removed

This bleeding is not a sign that quitting has caused damage — it’s a sign your body is healing.

If bleeding persists beyond a couple of weeks, we encourage you to book an appointment so we can check your gum health and provide advice.

4. Other Oral Effects of Smoking

Smoking can also cause:

  • Tooth staining
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Delayed healing after dental treatment
  • Increased plaque and tartar build-up
  • Higher risk of tooth loss
  • Increased risk of oral cancer

What About Vaping?

We understand that some patients turn to vaping as a way to reduce or quit smoking. While it may help some people transition away from cigarettes, vaping is not risk-free and should not be considered a safe alternative.

Potential concerns with vaping include:

  • Gum irritation and inflammation
  • Dry mouth (which increases decay risk)
  • Damage to oral tissues
  • Unknown long-term health effects
  • Continued nicotine addiction

If you are using vaping as a temporary step towards quitting altogether, we support you — but our goal is always to help patients move toward being completely smoke-free.

Free Local Stop Smoking Support

If you are thinking about quitting, you do not have to do it alone.

We have contacted Bexley Council Stop Smoking Services, who offer free support for local residents. Their services may include:

  • One-to-one advice
  • Nicotine replacement therapy guidance
  • Behavioural support
  • Ongoing encouragement

Professional support can significantly increase your chances of quitting successfully. If you would like help finding the right contact details, please speak to our reception team.
