Dental implants are an innovative way to replace missing teeth, classed by many as the ‘gold standard’ for restoring the functionality and aesthetics of your smile long-term.
Hook Lane Dental Care is pleased to offer this treatment, helping you leave the struggle of missing teeth behind. Whether you replace one missing tooth, or several, you can feel confident about your smile again.
Dental implants differ from dentures quite significantly in that they replace the complete tooth root, not just the visible section above the gum. A crown, implant-retained denture or implant-retained bridge attaches to the implant abutment above the gum line, with the implant sitting securely in the jaw bone below.
The security of implants removes all of the worry and discomfort you may have with dentures. With implants, there’s no more worrying about your dentures slipping when you talk, or eat. You can feel relaxed and comfortable again, smiling with complete confidence once again!
Dental implants aren’t an instant fix because they become part of your body by bonding with the jaw bone over a period of a few short months. The process, known as osseointegration, is precise, detailed and efficient, helping you achieve your new smile for life.
When you come in to us for implant treatment, your journey will usually look something like this:
Consultation
You’ll come to us for a friendly consultation to find out more about you and the results you would like. We will then ask you some questions about your lifestyle habits, oral health and overall health before examining your teeth, gums and jawbone. We will also book you in for a scan to check the bone density in the area where you need implants.
Implants are a very flexible treatment and we offer single tooth, full arch and implant retained denture options using the highest quality implant systems.
We may also scan areas of your mouth needed for bone grafting, sinus lifts or soft tissue grafting; additional procedures used for some patients to allow successful implant treatment.
Your Scan
You will have a detailed oral scan to check your jawbone density and other important measurements. This is an essential part of planning where your implant will be placed.
Second Appointment
At your follow-up appointment we will discuss a full treatment plan with you. This involves plenty of helpful advice on what you can do to be in the best health, ready for the procedure. We will also give you a transparent cost overview and timescales so that you are fully informed about the transformative treatment you are having with us.
Implant Treatment
You’ll come in to us for implant placement, getting comfortable and letting the local anaesthetic work before any treatment begins. Once you’re totally at ease and the treatment area is totally numb we will begin.
You may also have had bone grafting and similar treatments in an appointment before this, or during this appointment before your implant is placed. A small hole is made in the jawbone to accept the implant which is then screwed gently into place and covered by your gum to allow healing to take place.
You’ll leave the appointment with specific care instructions to give your implant the best possible chance of healing well.
Osseointegration
After the implant has been placed a remarkable process called osseointegration occurs, which is where the implant and the living jawbone bone fuse together. This is typically painless but will take a few months to complete. We will support you with lots of lifestyle and care advice to help ensure this healing process is successful.
Completion
Once the implant and bone has bonded it is time to complete the treatment. It may be that you have two appointments where we add abutments (the parts that connect the tooth replacement to the implant) first and then crowns later. It is individual to the patient.
The end result will be a complete smile where you regain your dental functionality, confidence and smile health through this incredible, innovative treatment.
Follow-up
In order to keep your implants strong and healthy you will need to take care of them, and possibly adjust your oral health and lifestyle habits. We will make sure you know what to do to keep your implants in great shape at home backed-up by periodic checks with our implant team.
