Valentine’s Day Sweets and Your Teeth

What we want our patients to know

Valentine’s Day often comes with an increase in sugary treats such as chocolates, yummy goodies, and sweets, which can pose challenges for dental health if consumed frequently or without proper care. If you have had a healthy start to 2026 you don’t want to undo all your hard work just for 1 day.

Sugar feeds the bacteria in the mouth that produce acids, leading to enamel erosion and an increased risk of cavities. Sticky or chewy sweets and foods are especially harmful because they tend to cling to tooth surfaces and remain in the mouth longer, prolonging acid exposure. Patients can reduce their risk by enjoying sweets in moderation, drinking water afterward, and maintaining consistent oral hygiene practices such as brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and flossing regularly.

Some take away advice is to enjoy those sugary treats straight after a meal and not to snack on them throughout the day.

We encourage our patients to be mindful of how Valentine’s Day treats affect teeth can help protect oral health well beyond the day!
